  VISITOR REVIEW

While we have had one good dining experience in Memphis, at Erling Jensen, we have learned not to expect haute cuisine, nor did we, on this occasion, necessarily desire it. We just wanted some relief from the ubiquitous fried catfish and well-done beef so prevalent in this area. Even with these low expectations in mind, and coupled with several favorable reviews from this and other online and personal sources, I do not believe that words can adequately express how absolutly terrible this unfortunate eatery really is. From the dreary strip mall exterior that prompted my wife to question whether this really was the restaurant we had been directed to, to the missing cutlery on virtually every table in our vicinity, to the open mouthed mastication of the gentleman sitting across from us exponding on one of the `signature dishes`, which I found to be as tasteless and inexpertly prepared as everything else we sampled, this venerable establishment was nearly perfect in its sheer awfulness. I say nearly because the mixed drinks were very good, one of the waiters almost seemed to know what he was doing (unfortunately not ours), and one of the breads offered was well prepared. In an effort to assist the itinerant dishwasher who had apparently been hired that evening as Chef de Cuisine, swordfish even though previously frozen, should not be served rare. Green vegetables should not be cooked until liquefied. `Sautee` is a cooking method, not an essentil element of sodium restricted diets. Mashed potatoes should not be instant. Israeli cous-cous is not tapioca. A salad dressing using the word truffle should actually contain some. Rancid oil should not be employed as a component in anything, especially when entrees top $26.00. Coffee is not better the longer its sits on the burner. As we declined to sample the dessert offerings, we have no opinion as to their relative quality. However, if you have a choice between an MRE or a frozen pizza and Jarrett's, choose the former.
